The Carolina Region
2nd Annual Homecoming Skirmish
November, 2003

Ahhh, the trite old phrase: "what a difference a year makes". But in the case of the Carolina Region's 2003 Homecoming shoot, it's trite and true with a vengance! Certainly the indescribable improvement in the weather helped participation and attitudes alike, but the greater maturity and experience of the entire region served to pull all the elements together into a doggone great skirmish.

In the participation department, we went from last year's five Musket teams (several of them shooting short) to seven full Musket teams this year. The seven Revolver teams from 2003 sure beat last year's no Revolver match at all, and this year's Individual matches were a whopping four times the size of last year's.

And how did the Buncombe Rifles do through all of this? Well...

...It all started with the Individual Matches...

A Tale of Two Targets:
"...It was the best of ties... it was the worst of ties..."

Shane and Mike(rometer) Parris each put a 10 and four 9's in their respective 50 yard Musket targets in what, at first glance, appeared to be two mirror image groups! Well, being as they were tied for 2nd place, there was nothing to do but measure the groups. Shane won the tie by, get this: 0.011". Yes, that's eleven-thousandths of an inch!

Congratulations to all of our Individual Medal Winners!

With a total of nine Carbine shooters, we handily fielded an 'A' and 'B' team, and it was to be first place for both. The 'A' Team produced some fairly eye-popping results: out of the last 4 years of stats, these are our best Pigeon Board and Hanging Pigeon events shot by a full Bunny A team!

Once again, the 'A' Buncombe Revolvers broke team records, finishing both the hanging events and turning in the fastest Tile and Pigeon Board events in recent memory.
And once again we came in 1st A and 1st B.

Despite the best efforts put forth by Dave, Jerry Sloan, Jerry Davenport, and Todd Wenzel, our Mortar team got burned at the stake by a painfully-close 1' 1¾" courtesy of the 23rd North Carolina. We wound up in second as well at the 300 yard bucket shot by 10' 6", this time to the 24th Georgia.

But as the team matches came and went, this would prove to be the only silver lining our dashboards from the entire weekend!

Although the 'A' Musket team's Pigeon Board proved a bit lengthy, we were the only ones on the range to actually finish ours. And though the 5th Virginia Cav nipped mightily at our heels throughout, we managed to pull out a win by 28.1 seconds.

In the realm of match stats, however, much more can be said of our three farmers, Garnell Jackson, Jerry Sloan, and Geoff Tompkins. Garnell did a reprise of her 17 hit day from the Fall National, and between the three of them, the Buncombe Farmers dispatched 30 of the 58 targets broken by the Iredell Blues' 1st Place "B" Team!

And to wrap everything up and put a really nice finish on the year, the Buncombe Rifles came home with all four of the Region Trophies! As '03 heads for the history books, we can look back on some solid progress on the part of our team members and the Carolina Region as a whole.
