The 3rd Annual
Carolina Region Homecoming Skirmish
Nov 12 - 14, 2004

Garnell, Gordon Teetor, and Jim Dobbins gathered around the Sunday breakfast grill

Considering the weather didn't cooperate quite like we'd hoped, it looks like The Region made out OK on this one. What with the unrelenting rain Friday, we never got the range open and instead, the few shooters that showed up helped in target preparation in the hangar.

Saturday dawned with no precipitation, but the gray skies quickly gave way to broken clouds and a stiff, gusty wind that kept the paper shooters down to a minimum and bumming extra staples. Thankfully, about a half-dozen people were alert and nearby when a gust cleaned off the not-yet-scored target table and sent its contents headed up the runway for Catawba County.

Sunday morning saw lows in the upper 20's, and needless to say, everyone was a bit stiff for the beginning of the Musket match. Although the winds of Saturday didn't return, there was just enough of a breeze throughout the day that no one felt compelled to slip into some shorts and a tank top!

7 Teams for the team matches across the board put the turnout into the pretty good/could've been better category. Meanwhile on the other end of the range, we had only one team interested in the Individual Mortar event, a brand new experiment for this skirmish, so the 23rd North Carolina won that one. Buncombe Rifles and Iredell Blues joined them to field guns for the Mortar Team Match.

And for another region first, pieces of the 11th Indiana Zouaves, our neighbors in Winchester, fielded a Carbine and Musket Team, handily winning both matches.

But speaking of the Buncombe Rifles: although we brought home medals in each of the team matches, this turned out to be our worst placings in the three Homecoming shoots so far, coming in 3rd in Musket and Carbine, and 2nd in Revolver. We spent the whole weekend right behind the 27th North Carolina, except in Mortar where we finished 2nd behind the 23rd NC. In the Region Trophy Races, we once again swept Musket, Carbine, Revolver and Mortar.

And the weekend was not without its individual successes, as Todd and Shelby brought home some trophies for the old display case!
Todd Wenzel 1st 50yd Musket 46
1st 25yd Pistol 42-1x
2nd 50yd Pistol 31
2nd Pistol Agg 73-1x
Shelby Hilton 3rd 100yd Carbine 38

How Cold Was It??

That white stuff on the grass
ain't powdered sugar!
One important note from the Regional Meeting... we decided that until further notice, this shoot will be held on the weekend starting on the last Friday in October, beginning with 2005. This should give us a slightly better chance with the weather conditions, and for the next three years, the benefit of an extra hour of daylight!
